SIIC Transportation Electric Co. Ltd. (STEC), a subsidiary of Shanghai Automotive
Industry Corp. (SAIC), has won a contract to supply more than 6 million horns
to General Motors over the 2008-2013 period. SAIC confirmed the deal
and says it is the largest supply contact the subsidiary has ever landed, but
declined to disclose the value of the contract. The horns to be supplied
are the latest electronic horns developed by the company, says a source with STEC's
sales department. They will be mounted in GM's five sedan models produced in five
different countries -- China, South Korea, Canada, the U.S., Australia and Brazil.
STEC started supplying horns to GM in 2003. In August 2003, it secured
a four-year contract on the supply of some 2 million horns to GM's Lambda crossover.
Incorporated in 1988, STEC is an auto electrical and electronic appliances
supplier. In addition to horns, the company is also a major exporter of direct-current
oil pump motors. In 2007, it exported more than 90 million yuan ($12.5 millon)
worth of the motors to European and North American markets.
