NASHVILLE,
Tenn. (Sept. 23, 2007)-Cummins Inc. (NYSE:CMI) announced today that beginning
January 1, 2008, all of its on-highway products will meet the California Air Resources
Board's (CARB) new idle reduction regulation. The Cummins ISX, ISM, ISL, ISC
and ISB engines will all be "Clean Idle" certified by generating very
low NOx emissions at idle. Cummins
ISL product showed on Busworld Kortrijk 2007
CARB
established the more stringent standard to further reduce emissions by limiting
idling of new and in-use diesel trucks, including those with sleeper berths. The
new engine requirements apply to 2008 and subsequent model year diesel engines
in trucks with a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) greater than 14,000 pounds
and licensed for on-highway operation. The
new rule requires manufacturers to either have an automatic five-minute idle shutdown
timer that is tamper-resistant and non-programmable or NOx idle emissions of
30 grams per hour or less. Cummins 2008 on-highway engines will have idle NOx
emissions of less than 30 grams per hour and, therefore, will be allowed to
idle indefinitely. Cummins believes an engine that is permitted to idle indefinitely
will be preferred by customers, particularly the truckload and owner/operator
segments which typically operate with a single driver that frequently depends
on idling for cab climate control and to run appliances. The
new California regulation also requires Auxiliary Power Units (APU) such as Cummins
ComfortGuard. to have exhaust aftertreatment. Cummins ComfortGuard will offer
two verified options: 1) a stand-alone particulate filter on the APU diesel engine
or 2) a Cummins engine installation kit to route the APU diesel exhaust gas
into the Cummins Particulate Filter. According
to Jeff Jones, Cummins Vice President, Sales and Market Communications, "Cummins
clean idle approach is yet another example of Cummins innovative technology. It
allows our customers to idle in California and still comply with the regulations.
It also provides the flexibility for customers who infrequently need to idle more
than five minutes." Cummins
